Easy Acoustic Blues Lick in E - Hammer On to the Major Third

Published on 05 February 2016
The cure for boring rhythm guitar: Guitarists spend most of their time playing rhythm guitar, but very little time learning ways to make it a little less...well, boring. I'm guilty, for sure. When I noticed this in my own playing, I decided it was time to add a little lead work in with my rhythm playing. What I came up with are tiny little licks that can be worked in to rhythm playing. They really have added a little spice to my acoustic blues especially. I call these MICRO LICKS. MICRO LICKS are tiny lick fragments that become great building blocks for longer licks. But for the budding finger picking blues player, they work just fine on their own. Consisting of only three or four notes, these little guys may be simple but they are tasty. Remember: 'simple' or 'easy' doesn't mean 'boring' and these MICRO LICKS are great examples of that. Not only is the lick in this video super easy to nail (it's only four notes, counting the hammer on) but, this lick is incredibly versatile. I'm using this lick as a part of the classic blues shuffle pattern in E, but you can stick this lick into just about any groove. The move from the minor third of the E chord to the major third is an ULTRA-BLUESY move. You here this in just about everybody's playing from Robert Johnson to Joe Bonnamassa to Keb Mo. You can get a ton of mileage out of this little hammer on. Once you hear it, you'll instantly recognize this as blues music.
