Q: Lately, my focus has been toward studying jazz, but I'm having a hard time understanding how all of the chords are constructed onto the guitar neck. My basic theory is totally down -- I've leant about triads and seventh chord formulas. But again, taking these formulas to the actual neck is really overwhelming and most of the chord books out there show too many variations! So, I really want to understand the theory to the neck along with knowing the visuals of shapes. Andrew, you always have a great way of taking the complex and making it simple and well understood in your videos on YouTube... I hope you can help me with this one! - Gairhard, Switzerland A: One solution to this dilemma is to build a few basic triad and seventh chords with their roots outlined and located off of; 6th, 5th, and 4th strings. The purpose of this exercise (and later guitar practice) is to learn to control each individual note that collectively creates the various chords. Begin with seeing a complete octave run of any major scale as degrees (not the specific tones, but rather numbers). Next, analyze where the chord tones, extensions and alterations reside.
