How to Improvise: Step 1 - Know Your Roots http://www.bluesguitarinstitute.com/lesson66 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Want to know the first step to learning how to improvise? Here it is... Know your roots. Part of great improvisation or even writing out licks note-by-note is knowing the sound that you're going for. There's one note that will always sound like it works. You won't have to worry about that sour note sound if you hit it. This all important note: The root note! That simply means that if the song is in the key of A and you're using an A scale, say the A Minor Pentatonic. The A note is your root note. Starting or ending your licks on this note WILL work. And that's half the battle isn't it? Finding your way around the fretboard looking for notes that don't sound off-key? In this lesson, we'll take a look at a series of licks that really highlight the root note in different octaves and positions. This is the first step in getting your ear used to the nice, stable sound that the root note has in the context of a lick. Think of the root note as home base.
