How to use Blues scales on Guitar. How to link blues scale patterns. How to join blues scale positions together. From the Secret Guitar Teacher: http://secretguitarteacher.com/youtube/intermediate/electric/4EVRv_puF5o/83691199-how-to-link-blues-scale-positions.php This is a sample video from the Secret Guitar Teacher website (see link above). It's not for beginners, but if you have already learnt the blues scale patterns (or minor pentatonic scale patterns) in five positions, then you might find this lesson useful and interesting. Here's the abridged transcript: From the last lesson you should have improved your ability to quickly locate the first position in different keys. Once you can do that it's a great idea to learn a few licks that automatically help you link to the two positions on either side of the first position. It's important at this stage to note that the positional system of learning scale patterns is effectively circular. So, in this lesson we are going to start with a couple of licks that link the first position to the fifth. We'll be showing you these in the key of A, but its important to learn them in relation to the positions so that you can instantly transpose these ideas to other keys: Let's look at those a step at a time. If you want you can print out the tabs for these licks from the toolbox. The first lick links to the top end of the fifth position..Starting in first position...Then down to the fifth... Back to the first.. The second lick links to the bottom end of the fifth position.. Starting in first position...Then down to the fifth...Back to the first..And back down to the fifth again Let's just have a quick look at how these licks might fit in against a blues backing. You can access that backing track from the toolbox or from the main menu via the Backing Tracks Tab any time you want to practice those licks. Now let's look at how we link to the second position: Let's look at those licks a step at a time...The first lick links to the top end of the second position via a slide up the 3rd string...Starting in first position...Then down to the second...Back to the first.. Here's how we might use this in context.. And mixing all these ideas together ...And variating on them..You gradually build up a nice well-trodden path around these shapes. Take some time out now to really get to grips with that, then let's see if we can take the acid test and use these ideas round the 60 bar blues! OK -- Hope you enjoyed that. Do spend time integrating these ideas and more importantly using them to catalyse some ideas of your own. In the next lesson we'll look at some similar ideas that help link from the fourth position. Once we have done that -- you will be able to run around all five positions nice and freely using the first and fourth as pivotal orientation points. Look forward to showing you that as soon as you feel ready!
