The classic opening song of Led Zeppelin III. The main lick is played over 100 times! These days, you'd probably get the guitar player to play the lick once, and then cut and paste, but back in the day, you played the whole thing. That's why there are a lot of variations that Jimmy Page plays on this lick. Once you get the muting down, and get used to skipping the A string, the lick is not too tough to play, but I have heard a lot of guitar players sound quite bad playing this because they make a mess when trying to hit the F# on the D string! I had a lot of fun making this video, the hardest part was that bass lick over the A-B-C chords, that's really tough! I think that John Paul Jones will always be the most under appreciated member of the band, he really is an exceptional musician. Also, John Bonham's drumming in this one is just awesome, it's impossible to replicate his playing with a drum program, but learning the beat gives you a great insight into just what a great and powerful drummer he was. I hope you find the lesson useful and I hope you have fun playing this great song. I get a lot of questions about my sound so here's what I'm using: My amp is an Egnater Renegade head through a Marshall 1960b cabinet. I use a TC Electronics Nova System through the loop for effects. I also use a BB preamp on some lead tones and sometimes (rarely) a Boss CS-3 compressor. The reverb is from the amp. My wah is a Dunlop MC404 CAE Dual Inductor, REALLY great pedal! I also use a Polytune tuner which is fantastic. For this song I ran the amp with very little gain, between 2-3. It's just the amp and guitar with no pedals except a bit of delay and reverb. My guitar is a 1975 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. I have Suhr Aldrich pickups on it. I have them coil split, but for this video they were in full humbucker mode. Folks may be surprised at how much time and effort goes into creating these videos. If you're getting something out of the lessons and can afford to contribute, I've setup a Paypal link. If you can't afford it no worries, but if you can, any amount is appreciated and will help me to continue to make the videos.
