Q: When I go to play a solo, I try all kinds of stuff but nothing ever really feels like it connects. I know lot's of licks, but I can't seem to improvise with them as linked musical parts that have much heart and soul. And, I'm completely sick and tired of playing the Blues scale. I would like to have an idea of how to build my solos, because I feel my soloing approach is more or less missing of meaning and purpose. Logan -- Seattle, WA. A: Having a sense of meaning & purpose when you're soloing, comes from examining the actual form of your solo's structure. Just like a story teller works through an introduction, the main body, and finally the conclusion of their story, a good solo contains the same elements. And, of course it needs to follow a theme. Some solo's such as Jimmy Page's solo in Stairway to Heaven, are epic examples of this. But other solos are far less elaborate, so it also stands to reason that every player has their own way of expressing this concept.
