Jazz Guitar Scales: Don't use Patterns! (try intervals instead) If you're tired of running up and down scales when soloing, this will get you out of your rut. Here's how to REALLY learn scales in-and-out for Jazz guitar: play the intervals that exist inside of the scales! That's it. You now have hours and hours of practice ahead of you. Take one interval, apply it to many major or minor keys. Then reverse the direction, practice again, etc. See how I do it in the video. PLUS, I think you should not bother so much with scale positions ... quite the relief, uh?! Then you may want to mix and match different "patterns" but by seeing them as intervals instead of your regular Jazz guitar scales. (ie, you're not just running scales anymore, but using notes *within* the scales) Intervals This is a great tool. To me, it's better than licks, patterns or simply running scales up and down. You get to discover the fretboard, the scale, the patterns, the fingerings, the intervals (etc.) all at once, right from practicing just intervals.
