Quarter Step Bends

There are shades of notes. That took me forever to realize and even longer to begin to use that to my advantage as a player. But think about it....
Take a singer and a piano. A note is played on the piano and a good singer can match it perfectly. Say it was a C note. Then the piano player strikes a C Sharp. The singer replicates it. BUT, here's the kicker. Can the singer make his/her voice go somewhere between that C and C Sharp?
Of course!
For most of us non singers, we live in that space between the notes (it's called singing off pitch).
But this very - in between the notes - sort of thing can be very expressive and it's rampant in the blues.
One extremely useful application of this is the 1/4 (quarter) note bend. This is essentially where you bend a string up in pitch, but not high enough to hit the next pitch. Remember our piano example? We'll a guitarist can bend in between the C and C Sharp notes. That's part of what makes this instrument so vocal and expressive. And this little push of the note is incredibly bluesy.
Check out this lesson to learn how to nail this technique and you'll walk away with a nice blues lick too!
