The two guitar solos from Comfortably Numb always score near the top of the polls for the greatest solos ever recorded. David Gilmour is such an excellent guitarist. Very expressive with really nice vibrato and great bends. His phrasing is also unique and interesting. He plays the same position one pentatonic scale as everybody else, but he makes it sound different...I had a lot of fun working on this. I've never played this tune in bands before so it was great to figure out what I've been listening to for 35 years! This is from a Guitar World interview: “I banged out five or six solos,” Gilmour says. “From there I just followed my usual procedure, which is to listen back to each solo and make a chart, noting which bits are good. Then, by following the chart, I create one great composite solo by whipping one fader up, then another fader, jumping from phrase to phrase until everything flows together. That’s the way we did it on ‘Comfortably Numb.” I agree 100% with this quote: [David Gilmour] is obviously using a couple of effects, like a Big Muff and a delay, but it really is just his fingers, his vibrato, his choice of notes and how he sets his effects. I find it extraordinary when people think they can copy his sound by duplicating his gear. In reality, no matter how well you duplicate the equipment, you will never be able to duplicate the personality. — Phil Taylor, Pink Floyd's technician.[16] I hope you find the lesson useful and I hope you have fun playing this great song. I get a lot of questions about my sound so here's what I'm using: My amp is an Egnater Renegade head. I am using a Two Notes Torpedo Live. It’s a load box and a speaker emulator so I’m not running the Marshall 1960b speaker cabinet anymore. It enables you to crank up your tube amp but use headphones, or just listen at low volume through your monitors, so I can be rocking out and getting a great sound without bothering people around me. So far I like it! I use a TC Electronics Nova System through the loop for effects. I also have a BB preamp which I essentially never use anymore, and sometimes (rarely) a Boss CS-3 compressor. The reverb is from the amp. My wah is a Dunlop MC404 CAE Dual Inductor, REALLY great pedal! I also use a Polytune tuner which is fantastic. For this song I ran the amp with the gain at around 7. It's just the amp and guitar with no pedals except a bit of digital delay (385ms) and reverb. My guitar is a 1975 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. I have Suhr Aldrich pickups on it. I have them coil split, but for this video they were in full humbucker mode. Folks may be surprised at how much time and effort goes into creating these videos.
