Acoustic Blues Lesson - How to Write Blues Licks Using MICRO LICKS

Published on 05 February 2016
Want to learn how to write your own acoustic blues licks? The first step is to learn how to string together some tried and true blues licks just like the ones in my series of lessons on MICRO LICKS. To recap a little, MICRO LICKS, are tiny lick fragments that become great building blocks for longer licks. But for the budding finger picking blues player, they work just fine on their own. Consisting of only three or four notes, these little guys may be simple but they are tasty. Remember: 'simple' or 'easy' doesn't mean 'boring' and these MICRO LICKS are great examples of that. And its also worth noting that simple is only simple AFTER tons of practice. So, if you struggle getting these short licks down, don't worry and keep at it! You'll get there! Check out the videos to watch these blues licks in action. I break everything down for you, note-by-note and move-by-move. In this video, we'll continue to take a look at MICRO LICKS. If you haven't already done so, check out the first three lessons in this series. Those lessons will show you three super simple licks that we will use heavily in this lesson. This is where learning these MICRO LICKS really starts to pay off. For this lesson, I'll show you how to link together the three licks that we've learned so far to create a longer lick. You'll see that after you get down these ultra bluesy lick fragments that I call MICRO LICKS, you can string them together in a creative way to really spice up your playing. Be sure to check out the full lesson at: http://www.bluesguitarinstitute.com/acoustic-blues-lesson-how-to-build-an-acoustic-blues-lick-from-simple-micro-licks Remember to keep practicing these licks while keeping the groove going. I'm playing this series of licks over the typical blues rhythm shuffle pattern in the key of E. But as we'll explore later, this technique can be used over many different styles of blues rhythms and other keys. Start with the licks in the MICRO LICK lessons and use them as a guide on how to string together your own MICRO LICKS. If you want to learn how to write your own acoustic blues licks, I suggest starting small. Take three or four notes and put them together in your own short and sweet blues lick. Repeat the process three or four times so that you have a handful of go to MICRO LICKS. Then, slowly build on these small licks by linking them together creating longer, more complete lick ideas. If you focus on one key at a time, like I have with the key of E, you'll be able to spot notes that overlap. Those are great points to link the licks. I find that this process is a great way to leverage a tasty "fill" into something much greater. Play Hard! PS - If any of these licks make you think you'll never be able to play them, think again! Start with these small MICRO LICKS and keep at it. It takes tons of practice to play even the smallest lick, riff or chord on the guitar. But that's why we do it, right? For the challenge and the reward! So, keep at it!
