Jazz Chord Comping Creating Melody

Using the chord progression for the jazz standard Pent Up House this lesson illustrates two jazz ideas. 1st, comping chords with a descending melodic line in the upper voice giving the chords both a melodic and harmonic purpose. 2nd to show how a series of passing chords can set up the tonal center of the target chord. This creates a harmonic interest as opposed to measures of a static chord. Finally at the end of the video Rich show how adding rhythm to the progression creates even more interest, sounding like a horn section. 36 minute video with close ups rehearsed slowly and in sections.
