Maybe Joe Satriani’s biggest song, this one is a study in guitar playing! It has everything from sensitive melodic playing to blistering minor legato licks, speedy pentatonics, pinch harmonics, and of course the tapping section. The thing about Joe is that every note he plays, he plays well. Whether it’s a flurry of them or just one, he is connected to every single note he plays! Whether it’s a flurry of notes or just one, he is connected to every single one of them! It’s what makes him one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time in my opinion. He may be known for his crazy fast legato playing and whammy bar dive bombs, but to me it’s his tone and amazing expressiveness and feel that really makes him really stand out. For most guitar players learning this song and being able to play it in time and with feel will be tough. But once you get it down, you’ll be a much better guitarist. I hope you enjoy this tutorial and have fun playing the tune. It really has some absolutely KILLER licks in it! I get a lot of questions about my sound so here's what I'm using: My amp is an Egnater Renegade head through a Marshall 1960b cabinet. I use a TC Electronics Nova System through the loop for effects. I also use a BB preamp on some lead tones and sometimes (rarely) a Boss CS-3 compressor. The reverb is from the amp. My wah is a Dunlop MC404 CAE Dual Inductor, REALLY great pedal! I also use a Polytune tuner which is fantastic. For this song I ran the amp at full gain. I tapped in the delay with about a 25% mix. It's just the amp and guitar with no pedals except the wah, delay and a bit of reverb. I used the wah on the full treble position to give it that high mid bite. I used the volume on my guitar to ease off the tone. For the quieter parts, it was at around 2-3, and the heavy leads around 7-8. My guitar is a 1975 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. I have Suhr Aldrich pickups on it. I have them coil split, but for this video they were in full humbucker mode. Folks may be surprised at how much time and effort goes into creating these videos.
